The Professional Skills Curriculum

The PSC is a joint collaboration between CAPOD and the Students’ Association, with input from many additional staff, students and external presenters. The programme is open to all University of St Andrews students, and comprises over 30 different professional skills topics delivered through a series of online workshops, lectures and practical skills sessions.

How to participate in the PSC

The PSC is a ‘graduate training scheme’ before you graduate!  Open to all students, you can dip in and out as much as you like.

Getting started

You can collect a passport at any point during the year (either at the end of a lecture/practical skills session, or the CAPOD office), and use the passport to keep a record of your progress on PSC topics and extra curricular activities which help you develop your professional skills (e.g. society committee role, member of sports club, events attended).

Stamp collection

To confirm that you have attended / completed workshops, lectures & skills sessions, you are required to collect PSC stamps.

  • Online workshops
    • please visit the CAPOD office with your passport (Mon to Fri: 09.00 – 13.00).
  • Lectures & practical sessions
    • stamps will be provided at the end of the lecture or session.

PSC completion  requirements

To complete the PSC, please ensure you have completed BOTH of the following requirements:

  1. Obtain PSC stamps for a minimum of 8 workshops, lectures or practical sessions, completed during the year (1 September – 1 June).
  2. Write a short reflective essa(1-2 sides of A4) on your PSC experiences & what you have gained from participating in the programme.  Please read the PSC Reflective Essay guidance  (Word, 13 KB) prior to starting your essay.
    • upload to Moodle

Transcript & certificate

On completion of the PSC, you will be invited to a special recognition event to celebrate your achievements – this will be held around the beginning of May each year.

Your achievement will be acknowledged on your degree academic transcript and, if you choose, you can purchase a certificate endorsed by the ILM (Institute of Leadership & Management).  This includes a 6-month studying membership of the ILM.  Purchases can be made from the University shop.
